In vitro fertilisation - modern infertility treatment

In vitro fertilisation - modern infertility treatment

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is often the only chance for many people struggling with infertility to get pregnant. IVF is one of the assisted reproductive technologies and, medically speaking, requires mixing women's egg cells with man's sperm outside of the uterus. The procedure is carried out in our well-equipped lab facility, under My Clinic Riga's doctors and embryologists' supervision.

IVF Clinic – treatment plan

The IVF method is used when other infertility treatments fail, and when the patients' medical condition prevents them from conceiving naturally. Before the IVF can be performed, both the woman and the man undergo a thorough fertility check. Based on the results and the patients' medical history, our doctors can qualify the patients for this assisted reproductive procedure.

The list of tests required before the IVF treatment, including the virology tests in a certified lab facility located in Latvia, is as follows:

  • Anti HIV-1 un HIV-2
  • RPR
  • TPHA
  • HBs Ag
  • Anti HBc
  • Anti HCV
  • STD in urine

In vitro fertilisation in 6 steps:

  • ovarian-stimulation.svg
    Hormonal stimulation

In order to increase the egg cell count, the patient undergoes hormonal stimulation. The doctor determines the specific medication and its dosage.

  • wizyty-kontrolujace-stymulacje.svg
    Control visits

During the stimulation process, the patient appears at the clinic several times to monitor how her body responds to the medication. The patient undergoes a transvaginal ultrasound, her specific hormonal levels are recorded, and the egg retrieval date is selected accordingly.

  • punkcja-jajnikow.svg
    Egg retrieval

During the egg retrieval process, the follicular fluid containing eggs is collected. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, so the patient doesn't feel any pain. It takes 20-30 minutes.

    Egg fertilisation

Egg and sperm are placed together in a dish to fertilise in an embryology lab. The sperm has been appropriately prepared for fertilisation beforehand.

  • cultivation-of-embryos.svg
    Embryo development

Embryos develop in specially prepared incubators under the embryologists' supervision. Development takes 2, 3, or up to 5 days.

Usually, 1 or 2 embryos are transferred to the uterus. The remaining TOP grade untransferred embryos are frozen.

In vitro fertilisation – donor programme

Some people struggling with infertility don't produce their own gametes needed for in vitro fertilisation. In such cases, it is advisable to consider the egg or sperm donor programme.

Our donors are young, healthy individuals without fertility issues. Their health is thoroughly screened, for example, through virology and genetic testing.

The donor programme is fully anonymous. The appropriate donors are selected according to their phenotype traits, such as:

  • height,
  • eye colour,
  • hair colour,
  • skin colour,
  • blood type.
